The Hearers, The Doers and The Hearers Doers

Mark 4:21-23
And he said to them,
“Is a lamp brought in to be put under a basket, or under a bed, and not on a stand?

For nothing is hidden except to be made manifest; nor is anything secret except to come to light. If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.”

Do you want to experience the abundant life that God made you for? (Jn 10:10)

Do you want true contentment; real satisfaction; and lasting peace? Do you want to live a life that matters - that will matter even after you’re gone?

Well, Jesus says - that the way to “the good life,” the way to a life that “matters,” is to live a life that is focused on spiritual truth.

Here in Mark 4, Jesus says something that should be blatantly obvious: when you bring a lamp into a room - you do so, to use it, to light up the room. Of course, the lamp Jesus was talking about was a clay oil burning lamp

No one would bring a lamp in - and put it under a basket, or under a bed No - you put it up (on a stand) where it can light up the whole room… you use it!

So too the spiritual truths that Jesus teaches. They are to be used - to be personally applied - to be put into action.

The parable of the soils (Mark 4:1-20) stressed that we need to accept, and to understand, and to retain the truths of God’s Word.

Now here, in the parable of the Lamp, Jesus builds upon that truth God’s Word is to be put into action, it’s to be lived out - it’s not mere philosophy or inspirational slogans- it’s how we’re to live!

And so Jesus says (quite literally): if you’ve got ears, you better listen!

Don’t you think that we’d do well - to take this to heart? Both the context of this passage - and the greater context of Jesus’ teaching, point us to the fact that the goal here isn’t just right doctrine - but right living.

Not only do I need to agree with the teaching of God’s Word - I’m to live it. …and by the way, that’s a lot harder. It’s much harder to do what’s right, than it is to merely know what’s right.

As James 1:22 says: “We’re to “…be doers of the Word, and not hearers only…”

Or as Jesus says in John 13:17
if you know these things, blessed are you if you do them
