Why do you think people make a New Year’s resolution? It comes from a desire to change something. A dissatisfaction in the way things are. It comes from a lack of contentment. Sometimes there are things that we shouldn’t be content with. Maybe you feel like you don’t read your bible enough, or don’t fellowship with others enough. Those are just a couple of things that maybe you shouldn’t be content with. Though often times, I think, that our resolutions come from things that we should be content with.
Some common ones are get a new job, travel more, move to a new place. None of those things are necessarily wrong, but we take this time to reflect on things that we want. What we should be focussing on is what God wants for us. Sometimes, He might want you right where you are and that might be hard to hear. I myself tend to like change, I’m always looking for the next big thing to do, the next job to get, the next place to live but I have realised that God has me where I am because that is where He wants to use me.
We can trust that God is going to guide us and that He will take care of us. We can be content where God has us. Paul shared this with Timothy in 1st Timothy 6:6-8
“But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out. If we have food and clothing, we will be content with these.”
Paul even says as long as we have food and clothes we will be content! He didn’t mention a house! If we have put our trust in Christ, if we have chosen to follow Him, then He will take care of us, but He is going to do it his way and sometimes we might not like that. That is us, not being content with Him providing for us.
Ok, great, so how do I be more content? I think this is a pretty simple thing to put into practice. Be thankful. Stop complaining, no matter how good things are, we always find something to complain about. All that will do is make you unhappy with where you are. As you go through the day today, take a few moments and thank God for the things he has provided for you. Pray that He will give you contentment. It can be hard, but I think if we just change our outlook, and start thanking God for the things He provides, then this is something that will come easier.
