Why do we pray? You could sum it up simply by saying “to communicate with God” and you'd be right, but that's perhaps too simply put.
Prayer is a direct connection to a perfect, moral source, in an imperfect, immoral world.
Consider the example given by Daniel and David, both prayed three times daily, in fact, it became tradition for all Israelites to pray three times a day, this was to coincide with daily sacrifices. The Israelites did this as a way to keep themselves on track and accountable to God, but also to draw on God's strength in strife. Look what David has to say in Psalm 55:16-18.
“But I call to God, and the Lord will save me. Evening and morning and at noon I utter my complaint and moan, and he hears my voice. He redeems my soul in safety from the battle that I wage, for many are arrayed against me.” Psalm 55:16-18
David was speaking about strife with a “friend and companion”. What or who do we have strife with? Ephesians 6:12 says that we war “against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places”. That's all well and good..but let's make this more personal. Look what Ephesians 4:22-24 says.
“to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.” Ephesians 4:22-24
We are at war with our old selves, which are “corrupt with deceitful desires”. There will never be a point in this life where we will no longer have deceitful desires. Think about it. The lusts of the heart, greed, pride, hatred, laziness, etc… these are tied into the instinct of self preservation.
Most, if not all sins, are tied into self preservation. After the fall, God cursed the ground, as a result man now has to work to survive. The world takes this idea of “survival” so far, that they actually begin to worship it, this “survival of the fittest” they feel that they must, make it on their own.
In Matthew 4:4 Jesus showed us by example and words, that we are to put our trust in God for our daily needs “man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth God”.
If you are not hearing words from the mouth of God then according to Jesus, you are trying to live on an insufficient source.
I encourage you this week, if you are not ”praying without ceasing” start living a healthy diet of God, draw upon the only perfect moral source, for that is the key to growing spiritually healthy, spiritually wealthy and spiritually wise.
Love you guys,
