Soda, candy, a double bacon cheeseburger with extra bacon... What do all these things have in common?
They are terrible for you!
Yes they might be good for a time, but what comes after you swallow is the bad part. For some reason things that are bad for us entice us. We know its bad but we just don’t care. In the same way that we crave things that are bad for our bodies our flesh craves things that are bad for our souls.
James 1:13-15 says:
“Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.”
Have you ever heard someone say “Satan made me do it.” My younger cousin use to say that when he was a kid thinking that would somehow get him out of trouble. We like to blame the devil for our wrong doing and we even like to talk about how the devil is attacking us when in all reality it is our own desires that are leading us astray. Not to say people don’t get tempted by supernatural forces, but the majority of the time it is our own sinful nature that is luring us towards the fast food for the soul.
Sin may be satisfying for a time, but it leads to death. So, if your own desires are leading you to sin, what’s the solution?
“Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.”
This verse does not mean that God is going to give you everything you want, but when you are seeking after God, pursuing Him with everything, what you desire is going to be changed, instead of desiring to sin you will desire to serve God. Of course we are still sinful human beings and we will still sin but the enticement of sin will no longer be as strong since we will be desiring Christ.
I’ll leave you with this...
Colossians 3:1-4 "If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory."
