The Glorification of Busy

America idolizes busyness. Even if that isn't blatantly obvious, we can see it in all of the social media posts about how proud we are of how much we got done today, the memes that make fun of how much stress we subject ourselves to, and the endless articles that talk about our lack of balance in our lives.

Recently, I was talking to someone who was getting frustrated with themselves for taking a couple of hours to relax and read a book. It struck me how Jesus and many other prominent characters in the Bible are seen taking a little bit of time to recharge and refocus - and how that's viewed as a good thing.

Now of course, we must have balance. Things must get done, but over cramming our lives leads not only to stress, but also to doing things with half effort because we physically and mentally can't afford to go all out. Isn't giving 100% do what we do a command? Yes! Colossians 3:23 says, "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters..."

When we get too busy with our every day stuff, it is impossible for us to truly give everything we have to the things God has asked us to do. If you think about it, that means that we are not fulfilling our purpose when we allow our lives to become crammed with mundane things. I myself experience this quite often…though the things that I am doing are good, I truly can't give everything I have to everything I am doing. I have had to prayerfully choose giving everything to a few things over giving part of me to many things.

I encourage you today to prayerfully evaluate the things you're doing in your life. Outside of work, family, and church, other things you are filling your life with that are overwhelming you? Are these things distracting you from what God is asking you to do in your every day life? Are you finding it difficult to slow down and spend time with him because your mind is running through your list of things to do? Maybe it's time to take a step back from a few things and prioritize the things that God has asked you to do over the things that maybe you WANT to do. I will be praying for you all this week as you hopefully take the time to pray and consider!

Love you guys,

Liz
