What Hinders

What Hinders

Hinder: to make (something, such as a task or action) slow or difficult

Have you ever begun a task, and right after your labor has started, (whatever that may be), you realize that you are not properly equipped or dressed for what you have set out to do? But instead of placing the task on pause and properly preparing yourself you attempted to just “power through” it. Memories fill my mind of times when I’ve done this. Taking time to assess not just our goal, but the way that we are going about reaching that goal can determine how well we finish.

Paul in writing to the church in Galatia was astonished or surprised that they had so quickly turned away from the truth of the gospel that had been taught to them (Gal. 1.6). And in chapter 5 of his letter to them we read this:

(Galatians 5.7-9) “You were running well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth? This persuasion is not from him who calls you. A little leaven leavens the whole lump.”

Now at first glance without reading the surrounding chapters for context you might think that Paul is talking about some kind of depraved sin that has hindered the Galatians….but that’s not the case.

They were returning to the law. They were trying to earn their salvation through their own deeds. What this looks like for a Christian is putting on the wrong attire or taking the wrong tools for the job that we have to do. We are saved by the Lord but we are returning to the old methods of trying to earn the favor of God, and we have clothed ourselves in our own attempt to be righteous. We are hindered by obeying law instead of our Savior.

Remember.

Remember, you are a new creation (2 Corinthians 5.17). Clothe yourself in Jesus Christ (Romans 12.14), and return to running unhindered in the light of His truth (Galatians 5.7; Hebrews 12.1-2).

Remember, you are to walk in the light of His grace and salvation that was given to you freely (Ephesians 2.9)

Remember, this isn’t an excuse to sin as Paul will go on to say in Galatians 5.13...

...it’s freedom to love and serve.

So Christian….let us bask in this glorious freedom! Love one another and serve! Run unhindered until we complete the task the Lord has given to us and empowered us to!

Love you guys!
