“Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem… And he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord and walked in all the way of David his father, and he did not turn aside to the right or to the left.” 2 Kings 22:1-2
God doesn’t care how old or how young someone is. He is willing to use anyone - who is willing to commit fully to Him.
Look at Josiah. He was King at 8 years old. His father (who was just 22) had been king before him - but his own servants murdered him.
How would an 8-year-old survive?
Maybe his weakness helped him. Maybe he was willing to fully depend upon - and fully submit to God. And maybe - in making God his only strength - made him really strong.
Psalm 28:7 says:
“The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him, and He helps me.”
Here’s the key - Josiah did what was right in the eyes of the Lord.
He didn’t worry about what others thought - or even about what he wanted. He chose what he knew the Lord would want. And he didn’t just make that choice once, he lived it, he walked in all the way of David his father. Meaning this - he lived it each day, in every area of his life. And he wouldn’t be moved. He wouldn’t let others or life - change his course. No matter what happened, no matter who opposed him, he did not turn aside to the right or to the left - Josiah stayed the course. He stuck it out, even when it was hard. I don’t know what God will do with you. But if you commit fully to Him, He will use you. I doubt he’ll make you King (we don’t have one of those). But He will use you - wether you’re young or old, weak or strong, smart or not! If you will make Him your strength, if you will submit yourself to Him, He will use you.
A shoe salesman named DL Moody once heard a preacher say: “The world has yet to see what God can do with a man fully committed to him.” Moody responded: “With God’s help, I aim to be that man.” He was a nobody. Not gifted, not educated. Not showing much promise. And yet, he did some stuff. God used him. You should check him out…
