“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one…” -Ephesians 6:10-16
The armor of God, something we have all probably heard over and over again and at least at one point in your life made cardboard armor for vbs or a camp or something like that. The funny thing is that the armor of God isn’t only meant for little kids. Armor was meant for people that were going to war; not for children.
Are you at war? It's a trick question...you are. It is not a physical war, but a spiritual war. Paul said we do not wrestle against flesh and blood but against spiritual forces. One commentator said “If you do not know you are at war then you probably are not winning the battle.”
Now we could talk about this all day, but I wanna focus on the shield of faith.
“In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one”
What protection do you have against the devil if you do not take up the shield of faith? If I shot a flaming arrow at you and you didn’t have shield then you're dead. (Probably not because I don’t know how to shoot a bow, but just go with it). If you are not prepared for the devil schemes then when they come you will fall.
Let’s put this in terms that we can understand a little better. When we are tempted if we are not ready to withstand it we will fall. We have all been in that place where we faced an irresistible temptation. It was only irresistible because we were not ready to withstand it.
“Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall.” -1 Corinthians 10:12
Once you get comfortable is when you are going to sin. The good news is the next verse. Turn over to 1 Corinthians 10 and read through the chapter for context. Verse 13 says that God always provides us a way of escape from temptation. Make sure you are putting your armor on so you can be ready to take that way of escape and extinguish those flaming darts.
