The Hourglass Runs On

Everyone, no matter who you are, will struggle with fear and anxiety at one point or at another in your life. The uncertainties of life drive us to that place. It can be overwhelming. Do we forget, that we cannot add a single hour of life to the amount that He has already set for us? The hourglass is flowing and we can’t lay it on its side. Are we making it count for Him or is it all about “Self”?

Luke 12:22-23 and 25-26 says this: “And He said to His disciples, ‘Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will put on. For life is more that food, and the body more than clothing….And which of you by being anxious and add a single hour to his span of life? If then you are not able to do as small a thing as that, why are you anxious about the rest?’’’

There is more to life than food, clothing, a healthy bank account, maybe a car, whatever it is that consumes you and makes you fearful when you think you may lose it. But there is something deeper here that we all need to see, and I really think the following part of the chapter is key to include in this devotion. In the next verse, Jesus tells them what they “should” be doing. Let’s look…

Vs.31and 33-34: “Instead, seek His kingdom, and these things will be added to you..Sell your possessions, and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”

Think about the joy that comes from a life focused on service and others, and don't you think that would get our eyes off of ourselves and our worries? I think YES! I encourage you all to not just read this and walk away unchanged. All of us, including myself, need to be challenged to step out of comfort and be willing to look for people who need to be loved and cared for, to give even when that means we will have less, and stop focusing so much on us. Remember, He isn't going to leave us hanging uncared for. He loves us.
